I am going back through my old blog from high school and I am happy I was just as into writing about music as I am now. The writing has improved over the years and a lot of my opinions have changed but I wanted to note my previous music thoughts on my new project. Below is an unedited review of Ben Fold's Rockin the Suburbs written in November of 2011 by Junior in High School me.

Rockin The 'Burbs

For anyone wondering why I am writing a review on an album not many people know about, i am bored, and i think this albums deserves a review. Plain and simple. Hope you enjoy.

Ben Folds "Rockin the Suburbs"

I give this album a 5 out of 5*

For those of you who enjoy listening piano rock or indie music and can't stand mainstream BullShit.I don't think I am to far fetched to say you will think Ben Folds is a saint. You just can't go wrong with upbeat songs that in retrospect are really really depressing if you seek the true meaning behind some of the songs. But they all can't be upbeat and depressing, so he is able to slow things done with a complete depressing song as well. On other songs he can rock out, and be very kick ass.

Dislikes

The only big dislike i don't like about this album is that a few songs, "Losing Lisa" and "Gone" are way to catchy and upbeat to be depressing,it throws you off gaurd, your all happy with the amazing vocals and musicianship your are hearing, but then it strikes you that, holy **** this is depressing as sin.

The continious putting himself down in the song "Rockin' the Suburbs" is a little sad, when he has more talent than 99% of the people on the mainstream radio today. "Rockin the Suburbs, just like Michael Jackson did, only he was talented"

Digs

  1. You can't go wrong with a stereotypical unison hand clap with a catchy piano riff for the opening punch in the face that is the awesomenis of this album. (Annie Waits)

  2. The vocal talent on everyone of the songs on this album are absolutely incredible.

  3. I am a very big CAKE fan as well, and i almost made a mess in my trousers when i hear the lead singer for CAKE do a harmony with Ben on the song "Fred Jones, pt. 2"

Key Tracks

Fred Jones, Pt. 2

Losing Lisa

Annie Waits

Rockin the Suburbs

Ascent of Stan

*I went back to my original review and decided this album was perfect
