K. Flay gets Raw

Alex Freund

K. Flay has been an artist on heavy rotation for me personally ever since I had the privilege of seeing her perform for the first time 5 years ago. I have since seen her several other times and have her on the itinerary for later this year. There is one word I continually use to describe how her lyrics and instrumentation makes me feel: raw.

She is able to tap into a space where my inner feelings that can’t be put into words are highlighted and put on full display through her music. The ability to articulate abstract feelings of anxiety, depression, and a multitude of other emotions is what originally drew me into her art.

Raw Raw is an appropriate title and theme for K. Flay’s most recent single based on her history of past works. The balance in instrumentation to me makes you feel a little off kilter and unbalance, searching for a tether to ground yourself throughout the track. Grungey industrial synth coming in an out of the song blended with the light echoes of her vocals pump up the adrenaline to correspond with the breakbeat drums and guitar riffs. I can’t help but presume the composition of the instruments are meant to induce a feeling similar to how she felt battling a hearing situation that left her in a continual state of dizziness and frustration, not to mention anxiety and intrusive thoughts.

I can’t wait to see where K. Flay goes next with her upcoming releases but if they are in line with the techno industrial rock sound of Raw Raw I will be ecastatic.
