My Fits are Happy AF

Alex Freund

In a world where music artists could forgo any sort of cohesive visual to their album art, when a group has a look that is quickly recognizable as I shuffle through my entire library, I tend to find myself wanting to know more. The band I am referencing with that vague intro sentence is The Happy Fits .

The narrative in my head for their album art is a line that balances between a label exec saying the bright and basic design is revolutionary and the product of the band's drummer's brother slapping together an easy to repeat visual that they created using a torrented version of photoshop. In either case, the artwork for all of their albums and singles have a motif that made me realize I have had several of their songs in my library for a long time and I am just now realizing it.

My first introduction to the Happy Fits is one of their top songs on Spotify Dirty Imbecile . The track has an interesting blend of upbeat folk and old time barbershop quartet stylings. Really simple rhythm section and acoustic accents where the driving factor to the song is the vocals. The way the song is formed creates a really anxious melodic chaos in my brain that makes me want to dance.

The next two songs I heard from the group both come from their album Concentrate and compared to Dirty Imbecile, it's no wonder it took me while to realize I was starting to gain traction into a new band obsession. Grow Back and Mary kicked my teeth in and made me want to run through a wall. The intro to Grow Back has an allure that brings me back to early Arctic Monkeys and the chorus is reminiscent in style to late 70s rock acts with belting vocals and a dynamic energy change that builds tension between echo-y snaps and hushed words before a sonic explosion takes you into your first happy fit. Mary on the other hand sends you directly into a headspace that can't help be but described as out of body. The overdrive fuzzy guitar and old timey vocal effects course through your veins before a string break-down takes you on a ride before the first verse.

Their most recent album, I will admit I have sampled segments of each track to get a taster but have not listened all the way through, has a lighter more pop indie vibe that fits more into a rooftop dance party or sunset beach party with 10 of your closest friends than previous albums.

The only thing I can say for certain about The Happy Fits is that their name is top tier and featured on my Top Tier AF Band Names playlist. Additionally I can tell you they play a diverse range of sounds and seem to be staying true to themselves on their social media. Lastly I can tell you they are going on tour this spring and they are a group I hope to see perform one day. Unfortunately for me they are not coming anywhere near me this time around, but I will add their name to my list of favorites that may tour together at some point. If any tour managers are reading this, The Happy Fits would be a great addition to a show with say...Jukebox the Ghost or Durry or Corook or K. Flay or Irontom or granson or or or.

Thanks for reading, as always til next time.
