Shayfer James' First Date is Hauntingly Alluring
There are fewer things that go better with a ghostly hyperbole than powerful piano chords and a snare drum that would fit into a battle march. Without knowing too much about Shayfer James, I would put my money on him growing up in the bible belt of America based on his description his first date alone.
I like to take his initial lyrics of First Date at face value and imagine a mischevous night in autumn where the only place in town young love birds could get some peace and quite is the chilling lawn of the local cemetery. Whilst stealing kisses under a cement headstone the couple would see a propped open door to the church sanctuary; where Shayfer took his first sip of sin in the form of the blood of Christ. (Side note, I did look briefly into where Shayfer is from (New York) and I was way off on my assumption but I like the picture I painted myself so I don't intend on editing that descrition)
My first kiss was in a cemetery
My first drink was in a church
The poetic rhythm James delivers his lyrics are hypnotic in nature that blend into a ominously calming rnb style chorus. Add the high notes that tip toe and accent the vocals and you can't help but feel drawn into the portait he paints and we aren't even a minute into the track that is nestled amongst his 12 song newest album Shipwrecked.
The track is haunting with dark lyrics and the instrumentation has a jazz infused groove that makes you want to shimmy in place before taking a shot of whiskey.
Shayfer James is another artist I recently have stumbled across that is able to seemless blend a lot of my favorite styles of music into a uniquely cohesive product. I have several of his songs sprinkled throughout my music library but First Date may be my favorite.
I look forward to getting to know Mr. James more as time goes on and I hope you do too. For now listen to his track First Date then listen to his newest album Shipwrecked.
