She's out of my league but she likes me alright.
I am fairly certain that exact thought is how I described my high school girlfriend to my family 14 years ago. It is probably for the best that this next song I want to write over was not released while I was that weirdly confident but overly insecure teen.
I got a girl, I think she loves me...unless the world is fucking with me.
And as it turns out in my case, the world in fact was NOT fucking with me, that girlfriend I mentioned in the intro became my wife, though still very much out of my league.
Late last year I heard I Got a Girl performed live before it was released as a single a few weeks later. Jukebox the Ghost has a knack for playing unreleased songs at their shows and making me want to play them on repeat for the next month straight, yet it appears to me that the guys of the band really like giving you a taste and leaving you itching for more. Previous songs personally fit that theme include Keys in the Car, It's No Secret, Stay the Night, Million Dollar Bills, and most recently, I Got a Girl.
Like most Ben centric tracks, I Got a Girl has a piano forward track that is more in the style of a guitar riff than it is a piano melody. Taking on a early rock and roll style tempo and instrumentation that blends sound effects and back tracking of the late 70s/early 80s (wow), a vocal style that is equal parts Jerry Lee Lewis and Freddie Mercury, and containing lyrics that are easy to remember after one listen, this single gives you a one pager on the history of pop based in roots of rock.
Plus, one of my favorite things Jukebox the Ghost incoporates into their music is what I call the rock clap break down, which is also included toward the end of the song. Other examples of that drum beat with the perfect spot for clapping can be found on Under my Skin and Hollywood.
Check out I Got a Girl below and tell me you love it....unless you are fucking with me.
