The Real Zebos get Rock Star Skinny
I would like to go back in time and be able to listen to a lot of songs for the first time again. The wonderful thing about music taste is that it's everchanging and for me personally I used to have a slow warm up, I have gotten better over the years.
Take Rollin in the Deep for example, Adele's huge smash hit and fantastic music video did not land for me the first time I listened to it. Quite frankly I thought it was going to be a flop and no one would listen to the song that arguably put her success into overdrive. That alone should give you all the information you need on my credentials.
Now that I have caught your attention with an intriguing Title AND opening paragraph, it is time to get down to brass tacks. This post isn't about music that I didn't like or my musical taste getting refined with age like a dry glass of sovereign blanc, it's about a song that I heard and immediately wanted to roll my windows down and let the midwest breeze blow through my hair. When I say breeze I'm talking 20-35 mph, the kind of wind that cools you down when its 70 and heats you up when its 72. The guys from The Real Zebos know what I'm talking about.
If you have read any of my other song reviews, I tend to like a good instrumental intro that leans on pop heavy keys or a nice bass line. Not even 10 seconds into Rock Star Skinny , we are blessed with exactly that. Add a lazy percussion groove that sits on the back of the keyboard beat, and you have a song that makes you feel like vibing out. Vocals on the verses have a great blend between early Twenty One Pilots and the Gorillaz and the chorus highlights the dynamic vocal feels the group can produce.
Though the Omaha basesd band has a monthly listener count on Spotify just below 70,000 and lyrics that are founded on cheeky self doubt, TRZ knows what they are about. Their "it" shows in their witty phrasing that doesn't translate on paper unless you also possess an oversaturated sarcastic personality that reads everything in the tone the good lord intended.
Maybe I'll get rock star skinny, play pretend in all my videos. Half the skill (I call bullshit -AF) but twice as witty (accurate -AF)
