Girls Do it Best – High Step Society

Alex Freund

With a statement I couldn’t agree with more and a sound that feels like I am in a vibey echo chamber making my way to a time machine, Girls Do it Best is a taste of a band I hope to dive much deeper on in the very near future.

As a jazz musician in high school and part of college and a music nerd from before I can even remember, High Step Society brings out some feelings of music creativity I haven’t experienced in quite some time.

Vocals are what I describe as the ominously cheerful tone from the flowerpower decade mixed with a jazz age sultry lounge singer that entices you to need more with each passing lyric. Hypnotic vibraphone and a sax break down that makes me want to move my entire soul with the rhythm are the key features to listen for but that isn’t the only thing Girls Do it Best brings to the party.

The backbone of percussion feels plucked straight from an underground basement show of a vibe hop DJ and the instrument solos weaved throughout the track are brillianly placed to harmonize with the wide blend of musical influences.

If I were to pair drink with this song, I would go with an Old Fashioned with two shots of whiskey. Classic with a bite of something to bring you to the present.

While HSS may not be skyrocketing to the top of the pop charts, they are making their way straight to my heart. I hope to experience their sound live and in person someday. I could imagine a day they join up on tour with the likes of Here Come the Mummies or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

Listen to Girls Do it Best below and follow up with shuffling of their artist page on Spotify for a a fun and chilled out mindset.
